Ouija boards are like bad drugs.  The fix is immediate, the effect is short lived, and you take a chance every time you use them.  In the hands of someone who knows what they are doing and who takes the precautions, Ouija boards can be an effective tool in the search, but they are equally as dangerous in the hands of someone who does not respect what they can do or who does not understand what the energy and invitation is all about.

I use boards, and I have experienced the positive and negative sides of what they can do.  Some people who investigate hauntings or try to glimpse the other side will tell you the dangers outweigh the benefits, and I see their point.  Others will tell you the whole thing is a fake and a waste of time, and in the hands of a nonbeliever nothing makes sense.

The basic premise of the Ouija board is simple and at the same time very complex.  The board has all the letters of the alphabet, all the numbers from 0 to 9, a yes and no, and a goodbye.  Other boards have things like a sun to represent masculine energy and a moon to represent feminine energy, channeling corners or anything that might be important or representative to the user.  Where you get the board is irrelevant, although I feel silly using some of the new glow-in-the-dark ones bought at toy stores.  After doing some lessons in the paranormal at the residential school for convicted juvenile felons I worked at, students were spending their time in woodshop building their own.  A pointer is used as a type of lightening rod for the energy of the users and a spirit, and the spirit uses that energy as a line of communication.  It moves the pointer across the board in response to questions asked.

Of course this is open to critics.
First, there are the people who believe the board does not work at all.  Some cynics say it is only muscle spasms or the subconscious of the users moving the pointer.  Your answers are what you want to hear.  To eliminate this possibility, I suggest creating a controlled environment.  Have more then two people, and have one not on the board with their eyes open reading the responses.  The other that are on the board close their eyes and ask the questions.

Some say even this does not create proof.  They claim that either consciously or subconsciously the users can control the pointer with their minds, or through telekentics.  It seems funny to me they can explain away one controversial idea by using another.  If telekentics do move the pointer, it proves that theory correct, and if we have the potential to move things using our mind, it might be only a small leap that there is something of our mind which transends our bodies.

Let's say there are spirits and that those spirits can communicate with us using the board.  Ouija boards may not be the best way to go about trying to contact those that have passed.  Spirits that will use the board are generally not the most trustworth or positive people on the other side.  There is an idea that there several levels of ghosts that are classified by there spiritual evolution.  Ouija spirits are at the bottom of the list.  Think of it this way; would an enlightened spirit want to spend their afterlife with three teenagers in a basement talking about the world's problems?

While it is possible to talk with someone genuine, for the most part these people are using you, either for your energy or to maintain some kind of contact with our world and get over their lonliness.  To achieve this, they will do anything to keep you talking, from spelling things out slowly, to lying.  The lying is the most harmful to you, and I've seen the friends of mine start to cry thinking they were talking to their dead grandmother.  They will say they were killed in a dramatic  way to keep you interested or tell you general things about yourself so you think they are wise and all-knowing.  While keeping you on they can feed off your energy, and even possibly influence you in ways you don't know.

Just know this going in and bring plenty of salt.

You can spend a lot of time crouched over the board while real life and the possibility to contact real people passes you by.  I've fallen victim to that before, and when I looked up I had been using the board for hours three or four days in a row.  I suggest, whatever your intention while using the board, set a time to stop and follow that or you might look up and three hours have passed.
