Rehoboth

Rehoboth might be the most underrated and haunted town in Massachusetts.  To read more about some its haunts or to read one of the best books on New England ghosts, read The New England Ghost Files by Charles Turek Robinson.
The town has two active legends and dozens (and that is not an exaggeration) of cemeteries, some no more than a few Revolutionary War headstones and others much larger.  All of the sights would take to long to get into but here is a short list.

Annawan Rock has been the scene of weird lights and native American chants and yells.  It is the sight of a surrender that ended in Native American executions.

A red headed hitchhiker has been seen on Route 44 by dozens of people for decades.  It is not presented as being very nice, appearing to people and taunting them.

There is a haunted schoolhouse named the Hornbine School, now closed but easy to get to, has been known to have class since its closing.

Shade Factory Pond burnt down years ago, but some people have seen spirits in the ruins, heard screams coming from them and even seen the fire replay itself.  When we went, both the people I was with were overcome by feelings of sadness and had to leave.

There is a veteran’s cemetery in town that has been the site of several hauntings.  People who live nearby claim their animals react near the site, either running into the cemetery after appearing calm, growling and barking uncontrollably or running away.  Humans also have their own react.  Neighbors have reported a misty figure walking around the headstones and an unexplained red orb.

Palmer River Burial Ground on Lake Street has the ghost of a little boy.  People have seen just his face for a few seconds before it disappears.  Others have seen the full child who often appears injured or disfigured.  Several have also heard an unseen child’s voice say, “Don’t go.  I’m having fun,” as they have turned to leave.

We went one Halloween and tried to hit as many spots as we could.  Other than the factory ruins, we had little solid evidence of some of these.  In one graveyard, Jenna felt hands grabbing at her ankles as she walked through the rows.  We were attacked by something in the largest of the cemeteries, but we cannot identify what it was.  One resident told of a friend of his who was drinking in the same cemetery when he heard a disembodied voice say, "Hey, get off of me."  After taking three rolls of film, we were anxious to see what we would get, but upon arriving home, they had all disappeared despite the fact that I had put each in a safe place after it was finished.

Attleboro
St. Stephens Cemetery is supposedly haunted by the spirits of a little girl and her parents.  There have been footsteps heard on the pavement and apparitions heard.  One old student of mine would often go to this cemetery to do drugs and perform his own makeshift satanic rituals.  He once went up with three friends to cut their arms and drink each others blood.  After cutting his friend's arm, he was pushed from behind by an unseen force and the other kid was thrown to the ground.  They were sober, preparing to smoke after the ceremony.

Taunton
In a cemetery on Broad Street there is a rocking chair over a little girl's grave that rocks and often has a glowing green light coming from it.  Another one of my students said he and his friends would often go by this cemetery but never went in.  He said he threw a ball in several times and had the ball come back to him without him seeing anyone throw it.  Another one of my students said he slept there one night trying to "get home" after a stay in Taunton Secure Treatment.  Although he admits being scared and a bit paranoid because of the situation, he said he was awoken from his light sleep during the night by hands on his shoulders and a voice telling him to get out.

Mattapoisett
There is a cemetery on Wolf Island Road that has had several unusual reports of hauntings.  One is the form of a human made up of fog that walks the grounds.  It has been seen by several people and also keeps its form for several minutes before dissolving.  Another haunting involves a ghostly car.  A white mustang reportedly tailgates cars on the road and then disappears in front of the cemetery.

Westport
There is a house on Old Bedford Road that has gained legendary status in the community.  It has been abandoned since 1985 when the man who bought it for use in his mortuary business decided against using it.  There have been reports of lights flashing even though there is no electricity hooked up in the house for over fifteen years.  Police have made several arrests over the years and stake the house out on Halloween and other paranormal hallmarks.  The house borders a Civil War cemetery, and people in the area think this might be the cause of the hauntings.
